These are some silkscreen projects I did last quarter at school. The one above was done with screen filler and the ones below were done with photo emulsion.

New Works by Colin Mikel Northcraft

In 2010 Colin Mikel Northcraft spent 231 days in Vietnam. “No Mercy”, his new show of stencils and paintings presented by the New Mystics Academy of Dark Arts, is an expression of his time spent there.

By creating a series of portraits of Ho Chi Minh, who’s image was an ever present symbol in his daily life during that time, he explores the identity of a country that for many Americans exists only as a tourist destination or the site of American’s most famous failed war.

Ho Chi Minh was the president and founder of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and led the Veit Cong against American troops during the Vietnam war. His image is displayed in every classroom, office, and home, and on each denomination of currency. The communist government views Uncle Ho, as he is affectionately called, with almost god-like reverence. His image in the American media is distinctly different - as a scourge and figurehead of the spread of communist, and hence anti-American, sentiment.

To some Ho Chi Minh is a martyr, to others a monster. In this series of 231 portraits Northcraft explorers this duality, and tries to reconcile the jungle hell remembered by his father’s generation with the booming vacation destination that the country has become. Finally, Northcraft struggles to assign meaning to his experience as an outsider living within this culture, and contend with the history and reality of overlapping American and Vietnamese ideals which shaped his experience abroad.

“The Dorothy K.: Shorter Are The Prayers in Bed, but More Heartfelt” is the conclusion to a series of Dorothy K. pieces director/writer/and producer Ryan Mitchell and Implied Violence have been working on since their residency at The Watermill Center in the fall of 2008. With presentations at The New isLand Festival (NY), The Donau Festival (Krems Austria) and The Frye Art Museum (Seattle WA) each of the different iterations of The Dorothy K. have been a specific and significant exploration of imagery, performance, and theatrical device; achieving heightened and ecstatic states through ritual, procession, use of organic materials, exhaustion, ether, leeching, binding, restrictive costumes, and the firing of arrows into waxed objects held a loft by human hands. Shorter are the Prayers…carries the weight of The Dorothy K.’s own history, and defines the heuristic process that has changed these Idols into Icons, and unravels the imperfect past logic of forever, after the sublime has been touched, grasped, and forced to give way to the ever looming future.

I went to Seattle's Art Walk this month after not going for quite a while... It was great because there was lots of cool stuff! Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls & The Babies had an art installation at the 619 Arts Building. I love her drawing style so much! Here are some pictures....

Claire Cowie's work at the James Harris Gallery was also a magical treat....

The other wonderful art I saw was by Kim Van Somen at the Catherine Pearson Gallery. I forgot to take pictures, but after looking at her Forts & Houses series online, it was great to see them in person. Kim's etchings & drypoint are so rich and beautiful!

IV at the Frye

Implied Violence did a 5 hour performance in the reflecting pool at the Frye art museum last month and I was very happy to be able to see so much of it. I know very little about performance art, and I didn't feel like that hindered my experience there at all. It was incredibly beautiful and captivating. If you are in Seattle, you should go check out their exhibit Yes and and More and Yes and Yes and Why which will be up at the Frye until January 2nd.

In six short years and a sustained blast of creative energy, Implied Violence (IV) has produced more than twenty-six multimedia works of increasing scale and ambition. Seattle audiences familiar with IV’s work will remember visually dense and conceptually rich performances such as Die Wandlung (Center on Contemporary Art, 2006); In Between More and More History (The Smoke Farm, 2007); Come to My Center, You Enter the Winter (The Bridge Motel, 2007); and Our Summary in Sequence: Barley Girl, Versus, and Eat Fight Fuck (801 Aloha, 2008).

In fall 2010 the Frye presents IV’s first museum exhibition, Implied Violence: Yes and More and Yes and Yes and Why. Introducing IV’s key concepts and preoccupations to a broad museum audience, this exhibition will provide an in-depth look at IV’s exploration of altered states, elemental, highly charged materials, and the shifting status of their objects from installation to prop to relic, especially as they manifest themselves in IV’s most ambitious work to date, The Dorothy K, recently presented at the prestigious donaufestival in Krems, Austria.

Yes and More and Yes and Yes and Why will feature sculptures, costumes, props, masks, video- and photo-documentation of selected past performances and a performance created especially for the Frye.

Implied Violence: Yes and More and Yes and Yes and Why is organized by the Frye Art Museum and curated by Robin Held in collaboration with artist Ryan Mitchell. The exhibition is funded by the Frye Foundation with the generous support of Frye Art Museum members and donors. Seasonal support is provided by ArtsFund. Implied Violence is supported by 4Culture and the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

It seems like some people might like some of the bows I've made in the past. All the handmade hair accessories on my Etsy were things I made for myself, never with the intent to sell them. It was only later that when I was cleaning my closet out, I decided to try to sell them cheaply on Etsy.

It's been a little while since I've done any sewing, but the other week I made a special golden birthday bow for a friend.

There was tons of great work in this show. I'm glad to have been able to check everything out a couple of times while it was still in progress, but was sad to see it get painted over on the last day. My favorites were Aerub's wall of black and white portraits, Angel 179's alphabet wall & Katsu's fire extinguisher piece.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

I made cookies today & they turned out pretty good. I got the recipe from VeganYumYum.

1 c vegan margarine (softened)
1 c brown sugar (packed)
3/4 c white sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
egg replacer for 2 eggs
1 1/4 c flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 c rolled oats
1 1/2 c raisins

Preheat oven to 350 °F

In a large mixing bowl, beat the margarine, brown sugar, white sugar, and vanilla until light and fluffy.

Add the egg replacer eggs and beat until well blended.

In another bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add this to margarine mixture until well blended.

Stir in oats and raisins.

Drop the dough by large spoonfuls onto a well-greased baking sheet and pat down slightly.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges begin to brown.

Let stand for 3 minutes before removing from baking sheet.

Makes 3 dozen.

I've been doing a lot of good cooking lately. Today for breakfast I had polenta made with fresh corn, onion, mushrooms & cilantro, black beans, "cheese" sauce from nutritional yeast, and a little bit of raw kale salad dressed with flax oil, agave & lemon (my new favorite salad). Then I attempted to make brownies but I added a can of pumpkin and it turned out more like a cake.

I have spent a lot of time in my life compulsively buying things (usually stupid useless shit) and then hoarding all of it until I have a freak out. Occasionally I frantically purge my closet. The problem is I am a very impulsive person... Just as I need the instant gratification of walking into a store and leaving with something new, I also want to get rid of shit right away. I usually end up donating everything to get rid of it quick, and I am continually throwing money away like an idiot. ANYWAYS, this time I am trying to sell some of this crap!

Here are some pictures of art I took at the MoMA in June:

This was my first time going to MoMA & it was definitely one of the major highlights of my vacation. I experienced a wide range of emotions during the time I spent there. I really enjoyed the exhibit on the top floor of Henri Cartier- Bresson's photographs-- I'm so glad I was able to see so much of his work. Most of my favorite photos were from 1945 in Germany. There was one in particular that I spent quite a while looking at-- it was of a woman collapsed and crying on top of a heap of what used to be a house or apartment building.

The next time I go to New York, I hope to visit the museum a couple of times. & also go to the MET because I haven't made it there yet!

When I was in New York I saw Kiki Smith's exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.
I liked her drawings that were done with ink, graphite and colored pencil on Nepal paper.
In a documentary I watched the other day Smith talked about art being a representation of your insides, and a way of thinking....

Track Racing

My 13 year old brother Lorenzo has been doing some track racing... He got 3rd place for the California state championships... This weekend he was in Pennsylvania for the 2010 USA Cycling Junior National Championships. He got 10th place for the 500 meter time trial, 7th place for the scratch race & 7th place for the points race!!

This photo is a crash my brother avoided during the scratch race- that's him on the left in the black Adam's Avenue kit!
